Only in 1967 did a team from another city succeed in winning a championship. Soon, strong teams were founded in Den Helder, Den Bosch, Haarlem, and the gap in championship for Amsterdam teams not only lasted for 18 years, but in 1994, the capital was left without a team at all. The next year, however, newly founded Astronauts got a ticket to the first division and immediately made its presence felt by finishing in ninth place. The following season, Astronauts won the 1996-97 cup and lost the championship in the last minute of Game 7 in the finals. Basketball was back in Amsterdam. Achievements kept coming in 1997-98 as new sponsor Ricoh signed on in time to see the club win the NBB Cup on a last-second shot. The next season, 1998-99, the long drought of a domestic title trophy in Amsterdam ended as Astronauts soared to the top of the charts in the Dutch League. The club liked that feeling, so next year, it repeated its triumph at home and put in a good Saporta performance for good measure. In 2000-01, Astronauts added to its international reputation by making the Korac cup semifinals after eliminating some much better-known teams. Another Dutch championship was won and despite some difficulties the following year, Astronauts kept the streak going to four consecutive titles. Astronauts had a 3-7 record in its ULEB Cup debut with stars like Chris McGuthrie and Joe Spinks. Astronauts returned to the ULEB Cup the following season and won another Dutch League title in 2005, sweeping Zwolle in the best-of-seven finals. In 2006, Demon Astronauts won three of its opening four ULEB Cup games but failed to reach the elimination rounds. With MyGuide as its main sponsor and players like Sergerio Gipson and Peter Van Paassen, Astronauts won its sixth Dutch League title in 11 years and is now ready for its fourth ULEB Cup appearance, hoping to use its previous experience to reach high in the competition.
